Yak-3U D-FLAK

Yak-3U D-FLAK

Besides the Yak-3 D-FJAK of Achim and Elmar Meier the D-FLAK of Maxi Gainza is the second Russian warbrid that has been based at Freiburg, right in the middle between the Black Forrest and the river Rhein. The D-FLAK, as the Yak-3U (c/n 0470202) is registered in Germany, is also a equipped with a powerfull Allsion V-1710 V-12 engine, but offers in contrast to the one with the red cowling a second seat behind the pilot, who also has complete flight controls available.

 The aircraft is therefore very well suited to teach people on how to fly such a mighty machine, or just to sit down and enjoy the ray power of this fighter!
 The first flight in Germany was performed by Achim on October, 23th 2004. Together with his brother Elmar the two Yak-Fans are looking for the aircraft and perform all the necessary maintenenace and checks in a most professional way.
After the winterbreak with some more test flights I was given the possibility to go air-air with the beautiful painted Yak in spring 2005.
While the snow was still lying on the slopes of the Black Forrest we had a productive time up in the air and captured the Yak in front of a background that might have resembled the one in front of which this warbird flew in the past.
Of course my sincere thanks for this unique possibility go to Maxi Gainza, the Meiers and Hans, our pilot of the photo-plane, for their trust, cooperation and support for this flight!

The EAA Airventure 2017 was announced to be the bomber year! And it really became bombastic. 590.000 people attended the event in Oshkosh, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid and also saw for the first time in more than 60 years two B-29 Superfortresses flying in formation. Apart from that once again more than 10.000 aircraft flew to Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, making it at that time the busiest airport in the world with approximately 123 aircraft movements per hour. For the pilots it was once again the great fly-in, and the highlight for the airshow this year were the US Navy Blue Angels.

50 years JG74

Open Days of the Luftwaffe are rare and few these days, and to reduce costs the 50th anniversary of the JG74 at Neuburg has even been held on a Thursday to avoid additional work during the week-end. Though this also meant that nearly all interested visitors had to take a day off, a crowd of around 15.000 came to celebrate that day.

Hispano Aviacion HA-200 "Saeta" D-IWMS

The Hispano Aviacion HA-200 "Saeta" ("Arrow") is one of the last designs fully developed by Willy Messerschmitt. It had its first flight on August, 12th 1955 in Sevilla.
50 years later I have been invited to do an air-air photo session with the only remaining airworthy HA-200 in Germany. It is part of the impressive collection of the "Messerschmitt Stiftung" and operated by EADS from their site in Manching.
