After along hard and hard abstinence from jet noise and the smell of keroseneI got twice the possbility to observe and photograph the flight operations of the Jagdbombergeschwader 32 ECR (Fighter Bomber Wing 32, or JaboG32), which is the only wing of the German Air Force to employ the unique Tornado ECR (Electronic Combat & Reconnaissance).
This special version of the tri-national European all-weather combat aircraft is equipped with new sensors, avionics and weapons to encounter hostile threats. Operating such a complex aircraft and applying new tactics to succesfully deploy their weapons the pilots and weapon systems officers (WSO) train their skilly daily during day and night. By invitation of the 1. Squadron, the "Lechfeld Tigers" (http://www.321tigers.de/) I have had the possibility to attend their daily training flights and to take the following photographs. Thanks a lot for their support! Tiger! Tiger! Tiger!

The same which goes for the Tornados is also valid for the F-4F Phantoms at Neuburg, mainting the capability to fulfill their mission during day and night, especially due to the fact that the Jagdgeschwader (Fighter Squadron) 74 provides QRA (quick reaction alert) aircraft on behalf of the NATO. During my visit 2 QRA aircraft departed late in the evening, shortly followed by a 4-ship training mission. Due to the planned arrival of the first Eurfighter Typhoon for the JG74 in July and the stealthy farewel of the Phantoms their take-off at dawn were quite symbolic to me. But nevertheless the Rhino can still be admired at the airbase until 2008, and you might also be interested in the photos that were taken at Neuburg during a Spottersday in 2003.
