Polish AF visit

Where? Poland, Warszawa area
When? Spring 2008

Sily Powietrzne Rzeczpospolitej Polskiej
(Polish Air Force)

90 years after its creation after WW I in 1918 the Polish Air Force is currently undergoing an impressive conversion process. A tour to the air bases of Radom, Dęblin, Mińsk Mazowiecki and Warszawa-Okęcie gave some interesting views and information about the transformation from being one of the Warsaw Pact's biggest Air Forces to become considerably smaller without loosing its strike force by employing more sophisticated aircraft.

L-29 Last chance check Radom and Dęblin are two airfields for training young Air Force pilots to fly. Radom is home of the 2 OsZL (2nd Flying Training Centre) using the PZL-130 "Orlik" turboprop aircraft for basic flying training.

Orlik Aerobatic TeamThe main part of the Orliks at Radom are still of TC-I standard, amongst them 7 being equipped with smoke generators are used by the aerobatic team "Orlik", with more and more PZL-130 TC-II coming to the squadron until the planned number of 20 TC-IIs is reached. The currently three TC-II's are equipped with a stronger Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-25C turboprop, added winglets and modernized avionics resulting in a more electrical cockpit design. From the outside this new version is clearly distinguishable by the orange stripe around its nose. Including the modernized avionics the aircraft is well suited for the new aircraft that will be deployed by the PolAF in the future.

During the visit to Radom 23 TS-11 Iskra trainer aircraft from the nearby Dęblin, hosting 1 OsZL, were also temporarily based due to runway repairs at their homebase. Whereas the TS-11 is the step between the Orlik and the modern fighter jets, it is a step back in time for the students regarding the avionics and power, though the handling characteristics are highly appreciated by the instructors.

Highly welcomed to see were also the different M28TD performing several t&g's as well as the two An-2, which will soon disappear out of the PolAF inventory.

When? 24-30/07/2017

The EAA Airventure 2017 was announced to be the bomber year! And it really became bombastic. 590.000 people attended the event in Oshkosh, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid and also saw for the first time in more than 60 years two B-29 Superfortresses flying in formation. Apart from that once again more than 10.000 aircraft flew to Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, making it at that time the busiest airport in the world with approximately 123 aircraft movements per hour. For the pilots it was once again the great fly-in, and the highlight for the airshow this year were the US Navy Blue Angels.

SIAF 2011 at Sliac

Where? Sliac Airport, Slovakia
When? 27-28/08/2011

After the SIAD and the NLD it was this year that Slovakia's big international airshow came to light as the SIAF. Whereas in recent years the big yearly Slovak Airshow NLD has been held in Slovakia's Western part as Bratislava or Piestany, SIAF chose the Slovak MiG-29 home base Sliac in the Tatra region as the new location – and this was more than one good reason to come back.
Situated in a valley of the Tatra mountain region, Sliac is about a 2h drive from the capital Bratislava, with several picturesque cities nearby that make it easy to spent some nice evenings after the long and exhausting show days.

"Bravo Hotel, line-up runway 07 right for photo mission"
Finally, after months of preparation and strong support by the Messerschmitt Stiftung and the EADS Heritage Flight I am sitting in the photo-ship on that hot August day 2003 and can listen to the radio traffic of the Messerschmitt Bf-108 D-ESBH that is lining up on the runway in front of us and which is the main target of that photoflight.
