JASDF Gifu Airshow 2017

 

Back in 1917 Kakamigahara airfield was used as an army airfield and a airship landing site. Today it is named Gifu, and is the home of the JASDF Flight Test Centre ADTW (Air Development and Test Wing). 2017 thus saw this wing’s home airfield centenary and was this was the main topic for the 2017 Gifu airshow. In previous years the ADTW always came up for the airshow with very nice special schemes on its McDonnell Douglas F-4EJ Phantom II, and this Gifu airshow was not different.

Wings over Houston Airshow

Wings over Houston 2017 was an awesome airshow! Plenty of warbirds, a Messerschmitt Me 262, jets from the Vietnam era, amongst them the venerable F-4D Phantom II, made up for a great program. This great mix on show at Ellington Airport in the South of Houston was enriched by aerobatic acts and the USAF Thunderbirds. With a 34-year long history the airshow is still very much alive and kicking!

Warbirds over the Beach Airshow

„Warbirds over the Beach“ is the annual airshow of the Military Aviation Museum (MAM) at Virginia Beach with a strong focus on aircraft of the WWII era. Each year during the May weekend before Memorial Day the majority of warbirds from the 1940s era being part of the fantastic collection of the MAM are literally unleashed and take to the air from a small private airstrip just South of Virgina Beach on the US Atlantic shoreline.

Fliegerschiessen at Axalp Shooting Range

The Axalp airpower demonstration (Fliegerschiessen) of the Swiss Air Force is held every year in the beginning of October. Located at an altitude of 7365 feet (2242m) above sea level the Ebenfluh shooting range provides a unique training environment for Swiss Air Force pilots to exercise their air-ground gunnery skills. Weather conditions for the 2017 edition of this famous spectacle were just right with some snow remaining on the surrounding mountain tops and splendid sunshine throughout the week.

Tsuiki Airshow 2017

Tsuiki Airbase on the Southern Japanese island of Kyushu hosts nowadays two Squadrons of the Mitsubishi F-2 jet. 6 Hikotai and 8 Hikotai are half of the JASDF Squadrons operating the indigenous, F-16-look-alike fighter, painted in an extraordinary and cool looking blue camouflage. The airshow at the end of October was a good possibility to see the pilots and their jets in action.

Shuttleworth - Fly Navy!

The „Fly Navy“ event / airshow at Shuttleworth is a close cooperation between the Shuttleworth collection and the “Fly Navy Heritage Trust”. As every flying event at the remarkable airfield in Bedfordshire it focuses on vintage aircraft, and this time it did with a special focus on the aircraft of the Naval Air Arm. This second edition of “Fly Navy” in 2017 has put a second chapter to a young, but already successful story.

Oshkosh EAA Airventure 2017

The EAA Airventure 2017 was announced to be the bomber year! And it really became bombastic. 590.000 people attended the event in Oshkosh, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid and also saw for the first time in more than 60 years two B-29 Superfortresses flying in formation. Apart from that once again more than 10.000 aircraft flew to Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, making it at that time the busiest airport in the world with approximately 123 aircraft movements per hour. For the pilots it was once again the great fly-in, and the highlight for the airshow this year were the US Navy Blue Angels.

LTG61 Penzing Farewell

The „Tag der Bundeswehr“ became a regular event to promote the German Armed Forces. Held on a Saturday usually around the second week-end in June several locations all around Germany open their doors to present the different tasks of the Bundeswehr to the public. This also includes the Luftwaffe. After last year’s major location Neuburg in 2017 once again Southern Germany did host one of the major Luftwaffe events. The Lufttransportgeschwader 61 (LTG61 at Penzing has been chosen as Luftwaffe’s main location of festivities. Unfortunately this fell together with a sad event that is just on the doorstep of this tradition-rich wing.
