Do-24 ATT - A flight for dreams

Dornier Do-24 ATT

Do-24 ATT RP-C2403

In September 2004 I have had the exclusive opportunity to do an air-air photo shoot with the Do-24 ATT which was staying in Oberpfaffenhofen (near Munich) at that time. Iren Dornier was keen on getting some photos of his aircraft in front of the stunning scenery of the German Alps. So we met on a nice and warm summer afternoon at the airfield and briefed the flight.

Shortly afterwards I jumped into the Do-27 photoship and with a continous climb rate we made our way directly to the summit of the Zugspitze. It was planned that we wait there for the Do-24 as she has a lot more power and would not need that much time. Sitting on the open door I enjoyed the flight looking down on the Lake Starnberg, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and, finally, the Zugspitze. Having reached a flight level of 11.000ft, which is about 1.000ft higher than the top of the Zugspitze, it became remarkably colder at the open door, but the stunning view let me forget my cold fingers really fast.

Then followed the photo session with Iren Dornier turning his aircraft around the Zugspitze and me taking photos of him. When I got my results we made our way back, while the last, and best, photos were shot, showing the golden illuminated flying boat floating upon a layer of white clouds. What a sight!!

On our descend back to Oberpfaffenhofen we also passed the beergarden of the famous monastery of Andechs, which made me even thirstier for a good cold beer after that succesful day.
