Luftwaffe unveils stunning space-themed Tornado for its 70th anniversary

The German Air Force has officially unveiled another eye-catching special colour scheme to celebrate its 70th anniversary. This time, Panavia Tornado IDS 44+34 has received a striking design inspired by space and the universe, continuing the visual theme chosen for this year’s anniversary aircraft.

Assigned to Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 33 at Büchel Air Base, Tornado IDS 44+34 represents one of the Luftwaffe’s last operational Tornados. The wing has operated the type since 1985 and remains synonymous with the aircraft after more than four decades of service. With the Tornado gradually approaching retirement, the special markings also pay tribute to an aircraft that has become one of the defining symbols of German military aviation.

Unlike traditional anniversary paint schemes, the artwork was not applied using paint. Instead, the aircraft is covered with a high-quality printed adhesive foil, allowing the intricate design to be reproduced in remarkable detail while significantly reducing the time required for application. The wrap can also be removed more easily, enabling the aircraft to return to its standard camouflage once the anniversary season has concluded.

The Tornado’s new appearance features a deep space-inspired background with stars, nebulae and cosmic elements extending across large sections of the fuselage and tail. The universe theme was deliberately selected by the Luftwaffe as the common visual identity for its 70th anniversary celebrations. Rather than looking solely back at seven decades of history since the service was established in 1956, the design also symbolises the future of air power and the increasing importance of space-based capabilities, digital networking and technological innovation. Together with a similarly themed Eurofighter, CH-53 helicopter and A400M transport aircraft unveiled throughout the anniversary year, this Tornado forms part of a coherent family of commemorative liveries.

I had the opportunity to witness and photograph the aircraft’s official roll-out in May 2026, documenting the newly finished jet when it left Manching towards its home airfield Büchel. Seeing the enormous artwork emerge from the hangar for the first time was an impressive moment, highlighting both the creativity of the designers and the technical expertise of InstZ11 specialists required to apply such a complex wrap to one of the Luftwaffe’s most iconic combat aircraft.

Beyond its striking appearance, the aircraft itself carries considerable significance. As one of the Tornados serving with TaktLwG 33 at Büchel, 44+34 belongs to the final operational fleet of the type in German Air Force service. With the Tornado expected to be replaced in the coming years, the anniversary aircraft not only celebrates 70 years of the Luftwaffe but also honours the enduring legacy of an aircraft that has been at the forefront of German strike aviation since the 1980s.

The special markings are expected to accompany the aircraft throughout the 2026 display season, giving aviation enthusiasts numerous opportunities to see the unique jet at air shows and public events across Germany and beyond.
