White and Blue with a Proud Heritage – TLG 74 Unveils Its New Anniversary Eurofighter

Some special liveries are created to catch the eye. Others tell a story. The German Air Force’s Taktisches Luftwaffengeschwader 74 (TLG 74) has achieved both with its latest Eurofighter, unveiled to celebrate the wing’s 65th anniversary and the 70th anniversary of the German Air Force.

At first glance, the aircraft is unmistakably Bavarian. The airframe is covered in the iconic white and blue diamond pattern, complemented by a golden lion and the wing’s crest. For the first time, the design also incorporates Neuburg Castle, emphasizing the close relationship between the air base, the town of Neuburg an der Donau and the region it has called home for more than six decades.

Designed by Neuburg-based artist Alexander Hamm, the aircraft is a tribute to the wing’s homeland. As former mayor Bernhard Gmehling once remarked, “The wing belongs to Neuburg just as much as the castle and the Danube.” That connection has now been transformed into one of the most distinctive Eurofighter liveries in Europe.

Inspired by a Phantom Classic

For long-time aviation enthusiasts, the new design immediately evokes memories of a legendary aircraft from the Phantom era.

In 2001, to mark the wing’s 40th anniversary, one of Neuburg’s F-4F Phantom IIs received a spectacular special paint scheme featuring the same white and blue diamonds and a prominent golden lion on the tail. It quickly became one of the most recognizable and admired Phantom special schemes in Luftwaffe service, appearing at numerous airshows across Europe before the type retired in 2008.

Rather than simply recreating that iconic aircraft, the new Eurofighter reinterprets the concept for a completely different airframe. The flowing lines of the modern fighter required an entirely new approach, resulting in a design that immediately recalls its Phantom predecessor while looking thoroughly contemporary. It is a fitting tribute to both the history of the wing and the aircraft that protected southern German airspace for decades before the Eurofighter took over.

Two Special Liveries, One Display Pilot

The anniversary aircraft joins another crowd favourite already based at Neuburg: the striking Tiger Eurofighter, created for NATO Tiger Meet duties. With both aircraft remaining operational, display pilot “Noble” now has the unique opportunity to represent TLG 74 with two completely different special liveries throughout the display season.

Depending on the event, visitors may see either the aggressive Tiger design or the elegant white-and-blue anniversary aircraft, giving the wing exceptional visual presence at airshows across Europe.

Designed to Fly

Unlike many anniversary aircraft that spend most of their lives on static display or on their home airfield, this Eurofighter was created to perform in the air.

The aircraft is part of TLG 74’s Eurofighter Flying Display, demonstrating the fighter’s remarkable agility, power and handling through a dynamic solo routine. Steep climbs, tight turns, high-alpha manoeuvres and rapid acceleration showcase the full performance envelope of one of the world’s most capable multirole fighters.

At the controls is “Noble”, the wing’s display pilot. Every display is the result of weeks of intensive preparation and training, ensuring both precision and safety while presenting the Eurofighter’s capabilities to audiences throughout Europe. The new anniversary livery adds another dimension to the performance, with the white and blue pattern constantly changing appearance as the aircraft rolls and turns through the display.

Continuing a Proud Tradition

Special liveries have become an important tradition at TLG 74, from Phantom farewell schemes and Tiger Meet aircraft to anniversary designs celebrating major milestones in the wing’s history.

This latest Eurofighter continues that legacy while taking a different approach. Rather than focusing on a Tiger Meet theme, it celebrates the wing itself, its heritage and its deep connection with Bavaria. At the same time, it pays tribute to one of the most beloved Phantom special schemes ever to wear the colours of the German Air Force.

The result is far more than an anniversary paint scheme. It is a flying symbol of 65 years of TLG 7470 years of the German Air Force, and a proud reminder that wherever Neuburg’s Eurofighters appear, they carry a piece of their Bavarian home with them.
